DANIEL KINGERY
THROUGH THE LOOKING-GLASS

20 December 2025 – 31 January 2026

Opening reception:
Friday 19 December 18.00 – 21.00

In Through the Looking-Glass, Daniel Kingery presents four new oil paintings based on iconic book covers. Familiar images (Caravaggio, James Joyce, Marcel Duchamp, David Bowie) are meticulously repainted, only to be partially obscured by the black surface of a smartphone.

The iPhone interrupts the image like a visual shutter. It conceals the face, cancels access, and replaces representation with reflection. What remains visible is not the depicted figure, but the surrounding space: light, movement, and the faint trace of the painter himself. The screen becomes a mirror, turning each work into a closed circuit between image, reproduction, and viewer.

Kingery’s paintings operate at several removes from their sources: canonical images reproduced as book covers, translated into digital photographs, and finally rendered in oil on canvas. The result is neither homage nor critique, but a quiet recalibration of how images circulate, accumulate meaning, and resist possession.

These works are not portraits in the traditional sense. Instead, they propose a form of self-portraiture by omission, one that shifts attention away from the subject and toward the act of looking itself. Standing before the paintings, the viewer inevitably enters the image, completing a reflection that was never meant to be stable.

BIO

Daniel Kingery (born 1980, Urbana, Illinois) is a painter living and working in New York.

Kingery’s practice engages with questions of representation, mediation, and authorship, often through the reworking of culturally charged images drawn from literature, music, and art history. His paintings frequently operate through strategies of concealment, reflection, and displacement, proposing forms of portraiture that resist direct access and fixed identity.

Educated at the University of Chicago and the Universität der Künste Berlin (class of Leiko Ikemura), Kingery has been active between the Berlin and New York art scenes for over two decades. His work has been presented in numerous solo and group exhibitions in Europe and the United States, including presentations at Pace Gallery, the Museum of Modern Art, Kunsthalle Exnergasse, Galerie Fridey Mickel, and Kosmetiksalon Babette.
